Supporting Concurrent Design Teams with Adjustably Autonomous Agents

چکیده
Extended Abstract Successful deployment of knowledge-based systems in design is very limited. It has been suggested that one reason for this is that models of design have focused upon what machines can do and not on how designers actually design. [1]. The Cognitive Engineering Research Programme launched by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council in 1995 is seeking to achieve this goal by developing a better understanding of how we should design interactive systems through studying people and organisations. Oxman [2] offers an approach to this through the development of an integrated understanding of design theory, cognitive science and computing. This paper describes work which attempts to address some of the issues above by studying concurrent engineering designers to identify (some of) the dynamics of the concurrent design process and examine ways in which these might be captured in computational approaches to support design activity.

Adjustably Autonomous Multi-agent Plan Execution with an Internal Spacecraft Free-Flying Robot Prototype
We present a model-based, adjustably autonomous multiagent architecture with monitoring, planning, diagnosis, and execution elements. We discuss an internal spacecraft freeflying robot prototype controlled by an implementation of this architecture and a ground test facility used for development. In addition, we discuss a simplified environment control life support system for the spacecraft doma...

Building autonomous robotic agents that interact with the real-world is a complex and difficult task and several distinct paradigms are used to develop such machines. In the past decade there has been an exploration of approaches inspired by evolutionary and/or neurodynamical principles. [1, 2, 3, 4]. In earlier work, we have examined architectures which support agent-based design of such robot...

The Problem: As we increasingly depend on teams of robots to explore our universe, there is a need for these robots to have a flexible level of autonomy. In the case of a Mars exploration team, the human controllers would ideally set high-level goals that the rover team achieves autonomously using an on-board planner and executive. A successful adjustably-autonomous system would have the flexib...

Concurrent design can be viewed as processes of collaboration, coordination and co-decision making within and between cross-functional teams. Based on this view we argue that an appropriate integration of information sharing and activity synchronization approaches is necessary and beneficial for a concurrent design support environment. This paper investigates support for defining a set of coord...
